Captivating Music

Over the years singer/songwriter Ray Mason has proven himself to be the Iron Man of indie rock. With a dozen solo albums under his belt and seven more with his band the Lonesome Brothers, Mason is one of those rare artists whose prolific output never waters down the freshness of his music. A guitar player who knows when to jangle and when to dig in, Mason's songs are engaging, moving and charming. "Shooting Over The Head" sounds like a more playful Neil Young; "Lunch Box" is not only fun, it boasts an infectious rubbery guitar line and "Eloise Please" is an imploring rocker that takes its cue from Buddy Holly's back catalog. Elsewhere, "Ceiling" is a hot rod rocker about boredom and the closer "Unusual Keys" is a raucous meditation on the passing of time viewed through the collection of a lifetime of keys. Excellent work, as usual.
