ALBUM REVIEW

Ravi Shankar

Rare and Glorious
Times Square

Ravi Shankar

On the cusp of his ninth decade on the planet, the sitarist Ravi Shankar remains the most famous Indian musician of all time. With a CV that includes recording the first ever long playing album of solo Hindustani classical music to his work with The Beatles and Philip Glass to playing groundbreaking concerts in the former Soviet Union and across Western Europe, Shankar is a bona fide living legend. Rare and Glorious is a breathtaking two-disc set that contains some of Shankar's well-known material as well as full-length cuts that are seeing a CD release for the first time. The nearly twenty minute "Raga Sindhu Bhairavi" is nothing short of stunning, while "Raga Hansadhwani" and the mesmerizing "Raga Khamaj" are perfect examples of a rare and singular talent.
