Love seems to be an ongoing theme on the Portland-based Ravishers' self-titled debut. There are songs about falling in love, staying in love and failing at love. And while at times this runs dangerously close to being overly sappy, Ravishers have managed to create an album of melodic indie pop gems. The keyboards are particularly effective on the seductive "You Have It" and the upbeat "The Chase." The vocals are gorgeous on the catchy "Keep You Around" and the Keane-like ballad "How I Feel." Jonathan Clay's vocals are smooth with a slight edge that draws you in; particularly on tracks like "I'm Him" and "Pinhole." The band takes a break from the sugary-sweet pop with the darker "All My Thoughts Are Killers," which has a discordant feel. Later it might be the topic and the piano, but they seem to be channeling Rufus Wainwright on "Nobody Falls In Love Anymore." The Ravishers' Facebook page says that they are still unsigned, but that won't last long with songs like these.
