There is nothing inherently wrong with music that focuses on the happier
side of life. In fact, Redcast's optimistic outlook on The Redcast
E.P. is quite refreshing, and with their catchy, upbeat melodies
you can hear the influence of bands like The Shins and Belle and Sebastian,
on songs such as the cheery "Beside Myself" and the delicate
"When You're Falling." Lines like, "You're the summary
of poetry and imagery" and "When you're falling/I've been
waiting here to catch you when you land" highlight the romantic
sensibilities of the band. But with lyrics that make you feel like you're
on top of the world all the time comes a real risk. By combining chirpy,
sunshine pop with saccharine- sweet lyrics about how wonderful life
is, you end up overdosing on happiness. This is nowhere more apparent
than on the excruciating "Soap," in which their sugary and
overly literal lyrics really start to wear thin. The band actually seem
to be aware of this, mentioning it in lines like "I could be so
much more creative/Given time/Given I had a better mind." Best
enjoyed in small doses.
