Shannon WurstWhat's More Honest Than a Song?
Shannon Wurst is a pretty girl with a pretty voice from Alma, Arkansas, the spinach capital of the U.S. Her voice will remind you a bit of Zooey Deschanel's in spots but when she gets going, she sounds more like Kasey Chambers. Knowing the savage music business the way I do, I would say that this is probably not enough to get people to listen to her CD so I also know that this girl has moxy and ambition and probably a reliable glue gun. She also writes good songs, the kind that you find yourself humming days later. I particularly liked "Ivory Bill," "Our Love" and "White Walls." The instrumentation on the whole CD is simple and never overdone, with flourishes of banjo and mandolin in spots but not too much more. All of Wurst's songs are evocative of her home state and she comes across sincere and plucky. She does a not-to-be-missed version of "Sixteen Tons," a classic that female vocalists don't often attempt. Take this record for a spin around the dance floor and I guarantee it will make you smile. Shannon Wurst is the real thing. The Vinyl Princess |
