It would be easy to dismiss Savoir Adore as yet another band from New York (they do share a label with MGMT). However, one listen to their debut album In the Wooded Forest will blow away any preconceived notions you may have had. Led by Paul Hammer and Deirdre Muro, the band brilliantly mixes genres with strong vocals by that make for an album you just can't stop listening to. "The Scientific Findings Of Dr. Rousseau" starts off the album with a heavy beat that builds up to a slow and steady groove, laced with attention-grabbing vocals. You get a sense this band is in 80's synthesizer heaven, which works in their favor on songs such as the pulsing "Space Travel" and the slower "Sarah's Secret," but the approach starts sounding cheesy on the overwrought title track. The fast-paced "Farewell My Love" is intriguing, with Hammer and Muro almost-speaking back and forth, rather than singing, while they go for a more rock sound on "We Talk Like Machines." The dance-rock mix continues on "Bodies," which may be the catchiest song on the album. Things slow things down with the quiet, acoustic sound of "Honestly," which is a beautiful and personal-sounding duet. It's a lot different from the other beat-heavy tracks, but still manages to fit in nicely. The bizarrely-titled "Transylvanian Candy Patrol" bears mentioning for name alone. It starts out softly but builds to a heavy chorus. These songs take you all over the place musically, but more importantly they keep you dancing. You really can't ask for anything more.
