Stillhouse Hollow

It's been a summer of revelations for the Vinyl Princess. I found that earring that has been at large under the sofa cushions for years and the hat that I misplaced last summer that makes me look tough. I also found some really great new music or rather, my editor found it, and said "Review this, you'll like it."

Stillhouse Hollow is a band you can take home to your mother. They've got that wholesome sound on the surface—stand-up bass, good rhythms, sweet harmonies, lonesome harmonica—but dig a little deeper and their sharper edges will expose themselves. "Strollin In" is a great example of what I'm referring to; a somber song about a guy who's got some splainin' to do, beautifully penned by vocalist/guitarist Nathan Griffin. He wrote "Path" too, which also features some slow-down-and-listen lyrics:

"Black Dog left my house today, I felt some of that weight get lifted."

"Painfully True" is another one that I love in its simplicity. It's just pretty and tuneful with a nice mandolin solo. My own tastes definitely favor the numbers penned by Griffin alone over the few that aren't. The single "Goosebumps" is catchy but I don't think it shows off the band's best work.

I've given this CD lots of spins and it never gets old. Take it on a drive and it won't disappoint. It's the kind of CD that gives you a fresh take on the landscape of your life.
