Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Lakeshore

Because nothing goes better with lycanthropy and vampirism than the sonically macabre, it's no surprise that Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans is populated by canonical Goth heroes like The Cure or murderpunks like Alkaline Trio and AFI. In this prequel to the Underworld series, all hell keeps breaking loose, getting tied up, and breaking loose again. There are plenty of fangs, soliloquies from the hirsute, swords lit in the half-light, and the always fabulous Bill Nighy presiding over it all looking like a coked-up Peter Murphy. You might miss the Beckinsaleian navel gazing that made the first film so poutingly sexy, but the darkly radiant Rhona Mitra, who presages Beckinsale's character is more than enough to distract you. Accompanying all this is a wonderfully gloomy soundtrack of remixes featuring Alkaline Trio's funereal "Over And Out"; Thrice's feverishly mesmeric "Broken" and King Black Acid's "Let's Burn," which comes with a nightmarish swoon. Elsewhere, Perry Farrell's "Nasty Little Perv" is a lippy blast of ornery electronica; The Cure's "Underneath The Stars" (which features Maynard James Keenan, Puscifer and Milla) aches plaintively away and Steal My Romance's "Ghosts On The Radio" manages, in its churning Goth lather, a truly wistful sentiment.
