Viva La Foxx

I Knew It Wasn't Love But...
Shake It

Viva La Foxx

In spite of the uncertainty of its elliptical title, Viva La Foxx’s I Knew It Wasn’t Love But… is a decisive blast of libidinous and bluesy rock and roll. The eight numbers here showcase the beloved Cincinnati outfits’ consistently aggressive game plan, and whether it’s the raunchy swagger of “Dirty Drill” or the searing hard rock of “Fake It,” there’s never a shortage of energy and vigor. Singer Amy Jo comes with a breathless delivery that has both muscle and bite and she prowls through these songs with an engaging intensity. Elsewhere, “Spitrocksfire” has a dark, prowling howl, while “Getaway Car” finds guitarist Reuben taking over the vocal duties, and backed by Amy Jo’s panting background vocals, the two turn in a bluesy, horny performance. Rounding out this collection are two covers—there’s a new wave take on Dutch legends The Outsiders’ “Doctor” and a torrid reading of Teddy & The Frat Girls’ “Clubnite.” that comes with pure fire and stomp.
