ALBUM REVIEW

William Fitzsimmons

The Sparrow and the Crow
Mercer Street Records

William Fitzsimmons

"Hold on, this will hurt more than anything has before," sings William Fitzsimmons on his third album The Sparrow And The Crow. He's not kidding. Filled with aching piano ballads and devastating acoustic songs about loss and hurt and betrayal, these are odes to an open wound, that, from the sound of things, won't be closing anytime soon. But Fitzsimmons, a licensed therapist, knows how to manage and referee emotions and as a result he never sounds like a man who's been overtaken by his grief. Instead he comes across as someone who's content to sit beside the dark stuff and let it do what it has to do. The doleful "We Feel Alone" and "I Don't Feel It Anymore (Song Of The Sparrow)" suggest Nick Drake; "If You Would Come Back Home" has a quiet, sweeping appeal and "Further From You" brings to mind Elliott Smith. Later, "Even Now" is a tearjerking piano ballad and "You Still Haunt Me" finds Fitzsimmons confessing, "I'm not comfortable with how the story ends." Thankfully, it doesn't end there, but with the breezy closer "Goodmorning" which catches him promising optimistically, "You will find love." A work of astonishing range and beauty.
