We Are Scientists
Brain Thrust Mastery
Astralwerks

It's not often that I find myself laughing while reading the press release for an album review. But that's exactly what I did when I read how We Are Scientists began, "when Keith Murray (guitarist/vocalist) and Chris Cain (bassist) met at a viewing of Dawson's Creek held in the latter's dorm room." Their first album plus everything I've ever read suggests that they are characters and it shows on their second release, Brain Thrust Mastery.
Brain Thrust Mastery starts off dark and full of intensity with "Ghouls." Single "After Hours" has a driving beat and infectious chorus, while the softer "Spoken For" is quite a beautiful way to tell someone you're taken.
As in With Love and Squalor, there are plenty of dance-crazy moments, such as the romantic "That's What Count," featuring the line: "If I'm not waking up next to you, why bother waking up at all," and the 80's pop-infused "Lethal Enforcer." They go for a harder sound on songs like the gritty "Tonight" which is highlighted by the brilliantly ironic chorus: "Tonight I promise to remember that making promises is always a mistake." Along the same lines is the intriguing "Altered Beast," with the lyric "Not so much the words you say, but how you move your lips."
The combination of catchy melodies with compelling, and at times hilarious lyrics, sees Brain Thrust Mastery pass the sophomore album test with flying colors.
