The first effort from husband/wife team Derek Webb and Sandra McCracken, the Ampersand E.P. is a lush and melodic six-song collection. "Valentine" benefits from Webb's moving falsetto; the rootsy "When The Summer's Gone" brings to mind the spot-on harmonies of Buddy and Julie Miller and the low-key pop of "When The Lights Go Out" showcases McCracken's stunning vocal range. Later, the spare and acoustic "If Not For You" is crisp and melodic, while the mandolin-inflected "My Finest Misfortune" has a dreamy appeal, in spite of Webb's confession of "I cannot sleep/I have a weary head." Webb's hooks come across like a rootsy version of the Candy Butchers' Mike Viola, while McCracken's vocal talents evoke Sheryl Crow with a much broader range. And when the two come together, it's one of the most perfect musical marriages around.
