ALBUM REVIEW

The Whiskey Daredevils

The Very Best of The Whiskey Daredevils
Knock Out Records

The Whiskey Daredevils

The Whiskey Daredevils sound like The Ramones, The Beat Farmers and a bottle of Jim Beam thrown from the window of a stolen car. But three times the fun. This Cleveland outfit's fifth album is an energetic blast of country stomp, swaggering punk and classic rock and roll. Recorded in just five days with John Smerek (Paybacks, Detroit Cobras) The Very Best Of The Whiskey Daredevils may not technically be a greatest hits album, as these are all new songs, but because every song is so good, this is not a case of false advertising. "Baby Won't Chew Dance Wit Me" sounds like Danzig fronting The Supersuckers; "Gary Sez Fuck 'Em" suggests the recent work of Cobra Verde, while "Friend In Jesus" is a roadstomping take on infidelity, where singer Greg Miller sings, "Jesus might forgive you for what you've done/ But he's a better man than me." Elsewhere, "Shifty" manages an infectious blaze, "Uncle Sam" is both a fight song for a sinking economy and a protest number of searing sarcasm and "Jimmy Rogers" literally digs up the bones of the legendary singer, making it a posthumous stalker's lullaby. Weird? Absolutely. Creepy? Well, yeah...But a blast from start to finish.
