Sounding like vintage German techno at zero gravity, White's self-titled album is a work of startling artistic ambition. Comprised of Beijing duo Shenggy and Shou Wang, White's aural attack is a post-apocalyptic sifting through the debris of what's left of the modern world. With their dark rhythms, stormy loops and penchant for blending television commercial samples with pulsing, ethereal rhythms, they could be the house band at any bar in Blade Runner. Produced by Blixa Bargeld, White's great strength is their willingness to not only go wherever they want, but to stay there to the end. The gear grinding "Space Decay" is pure sonic agitation; "Build A Link" is a hypnotic invitation to oblivion and "Train Song" is a nightmarish excursion on a railway line that surely must wind through Berlin and outer fucking space. Later, the inventive "Roswitha Strunk" rings dizzyingly away; "47 Rockets (For Wan Hu)" is a lonely and desolate jam and the jittery "Bai" is one of the most satisfying album closers of the year.
