Seven Days Now

It's hard to classify Xu Xu Fang's Seven Days Now EP. There's something dreamlike about the songs: distorted and off-kilter, but still fascinating and trance-inducing. The breathy vocals on their take of The Cure's "Fascination Street" don't start until roughly two and half minutes into the song and combining the distorted, dark feel with a heavy beat makes for one intriguing beginning. The song has a retro feel to it, but at the same time sounds completely modern. "Seven Days Now" is so country it even has the sound of horses trotting along at the start. The slow, laid back feel to the songs are reminiscent of Beck in his Mutations days. The grooving "Your Song" makes you sit back and chill out, but ends with the same horses trotting along. You start to sense a transportation themefirst horses then a plane taking off, serving as the start of the upbeat, but bizarre "Underground." The airy vocals work as a nice contrast with the rather danceable sound. Continuing with the theme of transportation, you have the sound of trains, cars, footsteps, a bus, bicycles and a subway throughout the 10-minute long "Where Is Everybody?" It's a fitting title for the desolate picture they paint with the music, although it's practically overwhelmed by the aforementioned sounds. They even throw in some Middle Eastern flair, before returning to the bleak emptiness to end the song. After listening to this album, you may still have no idea where Xu Xu Fang is going, but you will be sure of one thing: you don't want to miss it.
