Yusuf Azak
Gazelle
Independent

Although he's been flying under the radar for just a little while now,
Yusuf Azak is poised to be the next King of the Shoegazers. A gifted
guitar player and an affecting singer, Azak's compositions may be acoustically
based, but they're arranged with a layered complexity that makes every
listen reap new rewards. Soaked in coats of mystical acoustica and blankets
of vocal harmonies, Gazelle is something to behold: "19.19" is
a dizzying wonder; "Red Charms" is wistful and moving and "Gather Round"
sounds like Simon and Garfunkel by way of Gomez. Elsewhere, the hushed
"Belle Geneva" showcases Azak's skills as a guitarist and both the title
track and "Ursa Major" suggest early Stone Roses demos. Registering
the precision of Elliot Smith and the fuzzed out bliss of the Jesus
And Mary Chain, Azak's Gazelle marks the arrival of a major new
talent.
